Kelly Wearstler’s growing empire starts in Los Angeles, where her design firm and its posh but approachable style has helped define the modern aesthetic of the city, from its resorts and hotels to its most fashionable shops. Lately she’s expanded, with a boutique in Manhattan’s Bergdorf Goodman store and her appearances on the Bravo reality show Top Design. Wearstler’s honest, approachable charm is still intact, though, as she shows in this chat about her favorites things. —Paul O’Donnell

What’s your favorite space in your own house and why?
I’m still working on my new home, but right now my favorite room is the kitchen. The cabinets are made of brushed stainless steel with brass detailing—so chic and modern.

What’s something you should never skimp on when decorating your home?
Art and furniture, because you can always take them with you if you move.

Biggest mistake people make when decorating?
Buying all their furniture in one place because it is easy. Refrain! No matter if it’s with interiors or fashion, you never want to look like you bought everything “off the rack” without infusing your personality. It’s like wearing head-to-toe of the same designer. No matter how much I may love Derek Lam, I like to mix it up with vintage pieces or bold jewelry, like an oversize cocktail ring with an

organic feel or a thick silver cuff, to create my own unique spin.

Top tip for small spaces?
Play with scale, especially in a smaller space. I do this all the time! It causes friction, which makes the setting more visually interesting.
